Literature Review of Global Information Related to the Benefits of Ornamental Plants

This literature review is an update of “Literature Review of Documented Health and Environmental Benefits Derived from Ornamental Horticulture Products” (2007), therefore, this review is of literature published in the last decade (2010 – 2022). This report documents the benefits of the ornamental horticulture plants based on studies from around the world. Benefits of ornamental plants include air purification (both outdoor and indoor air), carbon sequestration, water purification, water retention, flood control, savings on energy bills due to placement of trees in strategic locations, affordable food from community/home gardens, lifestyle benefits of weight control, blood pressure and diabetes control from either active gardening activities or walking in gardens. The focus of this report is on the benefits derived from ornamental plants and does not include the direct economic impacts of the sector or farm gate sales. For the purposes of discussion, the benefits are categorized into environmental, economic, social/public and health/lifestyle benefits. It is sometimes easy to categorize these benefits into one specific category but not always – for example, energy saved through planting trees at certain locations covers economic benefits (savings on energy bills) as well as environmental benefits (shade, air purification). Most of this categorization is subjective and based on the author’s judgment. There are some additional value creation/enhancement benefits of ornamentals plants in addition to those of therapeutic gardens, such as, essential oils, aromatherapy, fragrances and medicinal value, some of which are discussed in this report. This document aims to inform the various stakeholders in the Canadian ornamental horticulture sector, educators, policy makers and the general public.
