Brooks is a small Alberta city located on the Trans-Canada highway approximately 190 km east of Calgary and 100 km west of Medicine Hat. It is the largest community within the County of Newell.
The climate is considered to be semi-arid with about 13” of moisture, snow and rain year-round.
Agriculture crops are irrigated for maximum production, with water delivered by the Eastern Irrigation District. The area slogan “Where Water Works Wonders”; is the perfect description of our community.
The economic climate of the area is mainly oil & gas services, agriculture & manufacturing. Brooks is home to the largest red meat packing facility in Canada. Brooks is also a leading community in respect to alternative energy sources, with several solar farms either established or under construction.
Brooks is a very ethnically diverse city, where approximately 70 languages are spoken. Diversity is celebrated in both Public & Catholic schools as well as being mandated & celebrated throughout the city.
The city is committed to environmental sustainability, with an active composting program and a leading recycling program. Trees are a very important component of the community in an environment where they do not grow naturally. The city has a policy of “replacing all removed trees with new ones.”
The Brooks Community in Bloom committee works directly with City Council, the city Parks Department as well as a number of other community organizations.
