Proud to be home to St. Francis Xavier University, our town of approximately 4500 doubles in size each September with the arrival of university students.

For a small community we pack a lot of punch! And, as host to the Antigonish Highland Games – the longest running games outside of Scotland – we know a lot about culture and hosting events. Antigonight, Antigonish Art Fair, Art After Dark, Music on Main, Antigonish Street Fair, Fesitval Antigonish, free outdoor movies under the stars, We Plant this Town and GoArts are but a few annual events that happen in our little Town!

What started as a few volunteers, looking to spruce things up, a Beautification and Land Rehabilitation Committee was soon formed and bought in by Town Council. With Council’s support many programs such as bench and tree dedications, murals on buildings, banners adorning our lamp posts, street and alley flower boxes, bridge basket flowers ,  an accessible water park, and wayfinding signage are just some of the things that draw people to our downtown.  We even have a river with salmon that flows right through the heart of our community!

We brag about our annual flower basket program! However, with the closing of our only nearby nursery we were unsure if we could pull it together.  With hard work by a dedicated staff member the Town was able to reach out to three new nurseries to step up and fill an order for almost one hundred flower and bridge baskets, with some flower orders coming from as far away as St. Peter, Cape Breton.  This year a Town Councillor (and member of our Beautification Committee) went door to door to ensure no business was missed in placing their order for hanging baskets.  The Town places the order and collects the fees, and hangs the baskets on behalf of merchants.  Then, through our wonderful partnership with the

Canadian Association for Community Living (CACL), the flowers are watered by their clients using a portable rolling watering station.

Come for a visit – you won’t want to leave. . . Cead Mile Failte! – One hundred thousand welcomes!
