The 14th Edition of Communities in Bloom

This year's evaluation tour is now complete.

Thank you to all the judges and congratulations to all the communities.

We look forward to seeing you at the National Symposium on Parks & Grounds and Awards Ceremonies in Lethbridge, Alberta.

Communities in Bloom (CiB), Canada's program for the improvement of the quality of life through beautification, community involvement, environmental awareness and heritage conservation, is proud to present its 14th edition. This national program assists Canadian communities of all sizes to improve their quality of life while encouraging community involvement and civic pride.

In 2008, hundreds of Canadian communities are participating in Provincial Editions, the National Edition and the International Challenge with municipalities from the United States, England, Scotland and Ireland.

In July and August, qualified CiB volunteer judges visit communities and evaluate each one on its overall performance in the following areas: tidiness, environmental awareness, community involvement, heritage conservation, urban forestry, landscaped areas, floral displays, and turf & groundcovers. The evaluation is based on the local conditions and achievements of citizens, businesses, organizations, institutions and the municipal government working together. The detailed evaluation reports identify each community's strengths and provide suggestions for improvement. The communities become part of an information exchange network with other participants in a dynamic and rewarding process for continuous improvement.

The results, including annual bloom ratings, criteria award recognitions and winners, will be announced at the National Awards Ceremonies, hosted this year by the City of Lethbridge, Alberta on September 19 & 20, 2008. The concurrent 11th edition of the National Symposium on Parks and Grounds will offer conference sessions, workshops and technical visits on the theme of Vibrant Communities in a Viable Environment from September 17 to 19. Provincial Editions also hold their respective Award Ceremonies in the fall.

WinterLights Celebrations (WLC), the winter edition of Communities in Bloom, held its seventh edition in 2007-2008. the program evaluates the overall performance of the community in the areas of festive season celebrations, winter pleasures, goodwill programs, visual presentations and tourism & promotion were evaluated. The results were announced in Saint John, New Brunswick on February 9, 2008. Next year's edition of the WLC Symposium and Awards will be held in Prince George, British Columbia from February 19 to 21, 2009.

Within the actual context of climate changes and environmental challenges, the communities involved in the program can rightfully and proudly state that, through the efforts of all those involved in their communities, they are actually contributing to the solutions.

To support the educational aspect of its activities, the organization established the Communities in Bloom Foundation, a registered charity dedicated to education and research in the area of green spaces and their positive impact on our society.
