Listowel Tidy Towns Group, Co Kerry, Ireland – 2017 International Finalist
Listowel (Irish: Lios Tuathail, meaning “Tuathal’s ringfort”) is a market town positioned in the very heart of North Kerry in County Kerry, Ireland. Listowel is situated on the River Feale at the head of the North Kerry limestone plain. The town is sometimes described as the “Literary Capital of Ireland” and a number of internationally known playwrights and authors have lived there, including Bryan MacMahon and John B. Keane. The internationally renowned annual Writers Week Festival celebrates Listowel’s rich cultural heritage.
Listowel also has had the honour of hosting the All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann on 13 different occasions. The “Fleadh” hosts competitions in Irish music, dance and poetry over a week long celebration.
Listowel also has a very successful history Ireland’s Tidy Town completion winning nine gold medals and achieving the title of Ireland’s Tidiest Small town in both 2015 and 2016.
Listowel’s long history dates back to 1303 where it first appears in the Plea Roll. The town developed around Listowel Castle, fortress to the Fitzmaurice family, and its magnificent Square.
