6 The reverse of the Medal for Volunteers illustrates caring and generosity as represented by two interlaced hearts. The sunburst pattern of the rim symbolizes the time that volunteers are giving and their actions. E n avril 2016 la Mdaille du souverain pour les bnvoles a t remise pour la premire fois par le gouverneur gnral David Johnston ceux dont les efforts et la gnrosit ont servi leurs communauts. Cette nouvelle mdaille reconnat les ralisations bnvoles exceptionnelles de Canadiens partout au pays dans un large ventail de domaines. En tant que distinction honorifique canadienne officielle elle intgre et remplace le Prix du Gouverneur gnral pour lentraide cr en 1995 par le trs honorable Romo LeBlanc alors gouverneur gnral. T he Sovereigns Medal for Volunteers was given for the first time by Governor General David Johnston in April 2016 to those whose efforts and generosity have served their communities. This new medal recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country in a wide range of fields. As an official Canadian honour it incorporates and replaces the Governor Generals Caring Canadian Award created in 1995 by then- Governor General the Right Honourable Romo LeBlanc. YOUR CHALLENGE Think about a volunteer who inspires you in their everyday actions and help us recognize them by submitting a nomination As a trusted partner of the program Communities in Bloom nominates volunteers from across the country as candidates for this honour. Any person who is a Canadian citizen and who has made significant sustained and unpaid contributions to their community in Canada or abroad is eligible.
