44 T wo teachers were interested in starting a program and the Gardening Academy was created. The first class involved gathering feedback and ideas from the students as to what they wanted to see happen. It was agreed that a spindly stand of poplars should be mulched to improve their health. Raised beds were added to grow vegetables and a bench with two tall beds on either side to grow flowers was installed. During the first work day participants lined the areas to be mulched with wood put down cardboard loaded mulch on top and raked it smoothly. The second work bee of that year involved the building of a pathway of shale in an area that was perpetually wet in the spring. Raised beds were prepared for planting and newly mulched areas were planted with shrubs and perennials. The students were excited to watch the vegetables and plants flourish. The following year saw the students planning and building another pathway and a memorial bench dedicated to a student who had passed away. Additional fruit trees and shrubs were planted. By the third year numbers had grown to an unprecedented 28 students. Students lined another two areas with landscaping ties and mulched the stands of trees at the two main entrances to the school. Through the program students were responsible to find donations collect cardboard and acknowledge those who had contributed to the project. Bake sales and other fundraising events were held. The school allowed them to have a storage area for tools and various seeds. Bravo to the students and teachers at Deer Meadow D eux enseignants taient intresss dmarrer un programme.
